Cassatt, Mary (1844-1926)

An American painter and printmaker who lived and worked most of her life in France following completion of her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.   She met Degas in 1877 and remained a close friend throughout his life.   Degas introduced her to Impressionism, a movement she supported enthusiastically and practically both by direct financial help and by promoting the works of Impressionists Manet, Monet, Morisot, Renoir, Degas and Pissarro in the USA.    In addition she participated in the Exhibitions of 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1886.

Jean-Baptiste Chardin
Chardin, Jean-Baptiste-Siméon (1699-1779)

Largely self taught and strongly influenced by 17th century low country masters such as Metsu and de Hooch, Chardin became one of the greatest of the 18th century painters.    A lover of Still Life and Simple Subjects, subdued colors and soft lighting.    Later in life, as his eyesight began to fail, he turned to pastels which, whilst not appreciated then, are now highly valued.

Constable, John (1776-1837)

English painter acknowledged as one of the finest British Landscape Artists.   He loved the English countryside, never traveled abroad, and his finest works were of scenes of Suffolk and Hampstead where he resided.    His talents were unique as he developed his own technique of capturing the variances of light and weather with rapid brushstrokes and splashes of pure, bright color.   Although he joined the Royal Academy Schools in 1799 recognition of his works was not swift and he was not admitted as a full Academician until 1829.

John Constable - Hay Wain 1817
Campendonk, Heinrich (1889-1957)

German Expressionist painter, printmaker and stained glass artist.   Studied at Fachschule für Textilindustrie and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Krefeld (1905/9) where he gained an introduction to the works of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne then in 1911 he joined Franz Marc and Vasily Kandinsky whose style is often visible in Campendonk's works.    Campendonk liked to experiment with styles such as Cubism, Futurism and Orphism.
