Dali, Salvadore (1904-1989)
Considered by many to be the greatest artist of the Surrealist Art Movement and acknowledged as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Born in Figuera, Spain his talents were recognized as early as age 10 when he received his first formal art lessons from a Spanish Impressionist painter, Ramon Pichot, later he attended the Royal Academy of Art in Madrid but never completed his studies. In 1928 he went to Paris where he met Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro and soon established himself in the Surrealist movement. He was soon to develop his own style which he called "hand painted dream photographs" characterized by minute detail, virtuoso technique and Freudian dream symbolism, all executed in a near photorealistic style. In 1940 Dali settled in the USA, not returning to Europe until after the war. In addition to painting Dali was a jewelry and clothing designer, book illustrator, writer and film maker. There are 2 museums devoted solely to Dali's works, one in St. Petersburg in Florida, USA and the other in Figueres, Spain. |

Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar
(1834-1917)
A French artist renowned for his ability to draw the human figure in motion and best known for his paintings, drawings and bronzes of ballerinas and of race horses. The way he captures and expresses movement, stressing balance and with a clarity of outline distinguishes him from other Impressionist painters. He commenced his art studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Jean Auguste Ingres who was revered by Degas, then left for Italy, staying there for 5 years studying Italian art, especially Renaissance. Later, after his return to Paris he met, and became greatly influenced by Édouard Manet. |

David, Jacques-Louis (1748-1825)
French painter, one of the central figures of Neoclassicism. Initially studied under Vien in Italy where he came into contact with the initiators of the new Classical revival. On returning to Paris in 1780 he soon established himself as a painter whose works epitomized the disposition of the period, a period of civic virtues, self sacrifice, devotion to duty, honesty and austerity. David was an active supporter and sympathizer of the Revolution, voting for the execution of Louis XVI, and was the unchallenged "painter of the Revolution". Later he was to become Official Painter to Napoleon whom he zealously supported and produced many fine works depicting the Napoleonic era. After the fall of Napoleon he went into excile in Brussels, the new subdued yet sensuous quality of his work reflecting his mood and position. |

Da Vinci, Leonardo (1452-1519)
A Florentine painter, sculptor and draughtsman, a universal genius who was architect, engineer, town planer, inventor, scientist, writer and musician.
