Gauguin, Paul (1848-1903)
French painter, sculptor and graphic artist, born in Paris but brought up in Peru, returned to France to take up work as a successful Stockbroker (1872) after serving first in the French Merchant Marine, spent a short period in Denmark and finally spent the last 10 years of his life in Tahiti. Impressionism excited him and was to form the basis of his works but individual artists were also to have a great influence on his works, notably Pissarro, Cézanne and Van Gogh. Whilst employed as a Stockbroker Gaugin was financially comfortable, however the collapse of his Banking Employer when he was compelled to rely on art for his income changed his financial circumstances for the worse, a situation he never recovered from, dieing a pauper. |

Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-88)
An English painter who specialized in portraits (for his income) and landscapes (for his pleasure). Set up as a portrait painter initially in Sudbury and Ipswich but later moved to Bath where his patrons were drawn from influential Members of Society then, after being elected a founder Member of the Royal Academy, moved permanently to London where he soon established himself as a Court favorite. Very much an individual painter although his works were influenced to a degree by other artists. For example his early works reflect the influence of French engraving and Dutch landscaping painting whilst his veneration of van Dyck clearly shows in some of his works executed at Bath (the Blue Boy) and a touch of Rubens is hinted at in some of his later landscapes. |

Guardi, Francesco (1712-93)
One of a Venetian family of artists whose work was largely immersed in the general works of the Studio until the death of his brother and Studio Head, Gianantonio, in 1760 when he concentrated on his paintings of Venetian Scenes for which he is now famous. A very prolific painter, he is also considered by some to be the authorship of the renowned "Story of Tobit" which decorate the organ loft of S. Raffaele in Venice, although there is some dispute as to whether this is wholly or partially attributable to his brother, Gianantonio. Elected to the Venetian Academy in 1784. |

Goya (y Lucientes), Francisco (José) de (1746-1828)
Spanish Court painter, initially followed the Rococo style but later was to become influenced by Neoclassicism. Elected to the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1780. Well known and remembered for his portrayal of violence, especially that of war, he was also an accomplished portrait painter to the Spanish aristocracy and his scenes of everyday life painted whilst he served as a Tapestry Designer at the Royal tapestry factory were to form an important part in his artistic development. A serious illness in 1792 left him permanently deaf, forcing him into a state of seclusion in which the fantasies of his mind were translated to his drawings and paintings in a bold and freely evolving style, often satirical. Goya died in self imposed exile in France. |
