Monet, Claude
(1840-1926)
A French Impressionist artist whose dedication to the study of light, tone and color and their relationship resulted in world acclaim. Educated at Le Havre where he met Boudin who encouraged him to paint nature on the spot. A practice which is evident much later in his career years when his own garden was to afford him subjects, particularly the "Nymphéas" (Water Lillies). In the late 1860s, working with Renoir, they produced the 1st pure Impressionist paintings. During the 1870s he worked closely with Manet, Morisot, Renoir and Sisley but his first big public success was not to come until 1889 at an exhibition he shared with Rodin. |

Marc, Franz (1880-1916)
A German artist who studied at the Munich Art Academy and co-founded "Der Blaue Reiter" with Kandinsky whose work and life was tragically cut short when he was killed whilst serving for his country in the First World War. In his short career he was to establish himself as a pioneer in the birth of abstract art and produced many brilliant examples of paintings of the Expressionist movement. |

Manet, Edouard
(1832-83)
A French painter and printmaker who successfully achieved the transition from the realism of Gustave Courbet to Impressionism. Manet chose subjects from the events and appearances of his own time, stressing the definition of painting as the arrangement of paint areas on a canvas over and above its function as representation. He exhibited in 1863 at the Salon des Refusés, his Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe ("Luncheon on the Grass"). Coldly reviewed by the critics but enthusiastically received by a group of young painters who later formed the nucleus of the Impressionists. |
