Picasso, Pablo
(1881-1973)
Spanish painter, sculptor, draughtsman, graphic and stage designer, and ceramicist who was the indisputable genius of 20th century art. The son of a Spanish painter and art teacher, José Ruiz Blasco he studied at La Lonja in Barcelona. His very personal style constantly developed as he learnt from his studies and associations with El Greco, Velazquez and Goya in Spain and Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin and Van Gogh in France progressing from his Blue Period in his early years in Barcelona where he drew his inspirations from the vagabonds, prostitutes and deprived people. |

Pollock, Jackson
(1912-56)
American painter, a leader in the Abstract Expressionist movement first studied as a Regionalist painter at the Art Students League, New York under Thomas Hart Benton, also influenced by Mexican Muralist paintings and Surrealism. Perhaps best known for his "drip and splash" style which emerged in 1947 when he abandoned the traditional easel in favor of fixing the canvas to the floor or wall and pouring or dripping paint from the can on to it. Instead of using brushes he manipulated it with "sticks, trowels or knives" and often adding an admix of "sand, broken glass or other foreign matter". |
