Renoir, Pierre Auguste (1841-1919)

French Impressionist painter whose works were greatly influenced by Claude Monet (treatment of light) and Eugene Delecroix (treatment of color).   He is a master at capturing the true color and texture of skin and  the grace of his feminine subjects.   He first gained recognition at the first exhibition of painters of the New Impressionist School in 1874 and was cemented by his solo exhibition in Paris in 1883.

Rembrandt - Stormy Landscape 1638
Rembrandt Van Rijn (1606-69)

Dutch painter, draughtsman and etcher whose mastery of light and shadow, luxuriant brushwork and rich color made him the greatest artist of the Dutch School and a true Master in the history of art.    Rembrandt was widely recognized for both his portraits and his landscapes and as an etcher he ranked amongst the most important of all time.

Raphael (1483-1520)

Full name Raffaello Sanzio, Italian High Renaissance painter of the highest order best known for his Madonnas and his large figure compositions in the Vatican in Rome.   Raphael's clarity of form, ease of composition and ability to make his subjects "live" set him aside as an indisoutable Master in his field and era.

Henri Rousseau
Rousseau, Henri (1844-1910)

French painter known by his nickname "Le Douanier (Customs Officer) Rousseau" refering to the time he spent working for the Paris Customs Office from 1871 to 1893 when he retired to devote himself to his painting.   He tried to emulate traditional artists such as Bouguereau but it was the innocence of his own individual style which won him recognition.   Perhaps best known for his jungle scenes ("Tropical Storm with a Tiger")  in which he illustrates his remarkable ability to portray on a large scale his imaginative powers and attention to detail.

Rockwell, Norman (1894-1978)

American artist whose works appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post for over forty years ensuring he was known to and loved by Americans everywhere.   He first studied at the National Academy of Design and later at the Art Students League in New York.   Perhaps best known for his "Four Freedoms" posters symbolizing for millions the war aims as described by President Franklin Roosevelt.    Also painted portraits of world figures including Nassar of Egypt, Nehru of India and American Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson.
