Seurat, Georges
(1859-91)
French painter, founder of Neo-Impressionism. Studied at École des Beaux-Arts, his early works show a strong incorporation of the disciplines of Ingres and the techniques of Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya. Seurat spent his life studying form, color and line and is best remembered for his technique called pointillism, or divisionism, which uses small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create subtle changes in form. |

Sargent, John Singer (1856-1925)
An American painter who spent most of his working life in London, England. Studied under Carolus-Duran then quickly gained a reputation as a very accomplished portrait artist. He associated with many Impressionists and his later landscapes were to clearly display his absorption of their technique and style. He formed a strong alliance with Claude Monet and produced two superb portraits of him. |

Schiele, Egon
(1890-1918)
Austrian artist who, during his short life, was often criticized for his obsession with the nude figure and his use of eroticism as a major theme, indeed he was imprisoned for a brief period in 1912 for obscenity. His work was initially influenced by Klimt but he soon developed his own unique style utilizing a series of jagged lines. |

Signac, Paul (1863-1935) French painter who was virtually self taught. A Neo-Impressionist and close associate of Georges Seurat he developed with him the technique known as pointillism, or divisionism, which uses small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create subtle changes in form. Many of his works are landscapes where he was able to use this technique to the full. As President of the annual Salon des Independants from 1908 to1934 he actively encouraged young artists and their controversial works in Fauvism and Cubism. |
