Tissot, James (1836-1902)
French painter and graphic artist. Initially he painted historical costume pieces but, when he was in his late twenties, he successfully changed to painting scenes of contemporary life, usually involving fashionable women in which he was able to indulge his love of painting women's costumes. He was a success in Paris and equally so in London where he was forced to take refuge following his alleged involvement in the turbulent events of the Paris Commune in 1871. In 1888 he turned to religion and produced many paintings of religious subjects, in particular his illustrations to the events of the Bible were extremely popular.

Titian (c.1485-1576)
Full name Tiziano Vecellio, Italian painter, arguably the greatest of the Venetian School. Instructed by Zuccati, the two Bellinis and by Giorgione who was to leave a lasting influence on him. He possessed an extraordinary ability to study and mimic (and improve on) the styles of his contemporaries, an ability which ensured he could complete the "Homage of Frederick Barbarossa to Pope Alexander III begun and left unfinished by Giovanni Bellini on his death. This brought him instant recognition by the Venetian Senate, a recognition which was soon followed by other notables such as the Duke of Ferrara, Pope Leo X, Raphael, Francis I of France and others. In all Titian painted over 600 works.

Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri de (1864-1901) French painter, one of the great artists who lived and worked in Paris in the late 19th century including Degas, Cézanne, Gaugin, Van Gogh, Seurat and Renoir. At the age of 12 and 14 he broke first his left then his right legs and the bones failed to heal properly. As a result he grew into manhood with a normal size upper body but very short legs and his height when fully grown was only 1.5 metres (about 4.5 feet). Because of this deformity Toulouse tended to paint scenes from the Montmartre section of Paris where he was sociably accepted, scenes including circuses, dance halls, nightclubs and racetracks, scenes which were to later make him famous, particularly those of the Moulin Rouge. His frequent inhabitance of these areas regrettably gave rise to a problem with alcohol which ultimately led to his death in 1901.

Turner, Joseph Mallord William (1775-1851) English oil painter, indisputably one of the finest landscape artists ever and also regarded by many as the founder of English watercolor landscape painting. A virtually uneducated child who was taught to read by his father he possessed a remarkable natural talent for art and was fortunate enough to be successful as an artist for the whole of his career. As a child of only 12 to 13 he displayed drawings in his father's shop window for sale and by the time he was 15 had received the rare honor of having one of his paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy which he was admitted to as a Full Member when he was only 27. He had his own studio by the age of 18 and by 20 he had print sellers clamoring for his paintings for reproduction. Turner traveled widely in Europe and Venice in particular was the inspiration of some of his finest work. He developed his own technique of translating the scene he saw to one filled with light reflecting whatever climatic condition he chose.
