Dutch artist who worked as art dealer, schoolmaster then missionary before turning to art at the age of 27.   Self taught his early works were heavy and rich but subdued in color but this was to change radically to thick, frenzied brushwork and brilliant color following his association with other painters in Paris .   He attempted to form a "Studio of the South" at Arles but was only successful in persuading Gauguin to join him.   Following a violent quarrel with Gauguin in 1888 he suffered the first of several bouts of madness and cut off his ear.   2 years later he shot himself.   During his short artistic career he was a prolific painter, sometimes completing a new painting each day, yet throughout this time he was little known and only sold 1 painting.    Now, in distinct contrast, his paintings are much sought after

Spanish Court painter, known as "the painter's painter" because of his ability and skill in merging and harmonizing all aspects of color, light, space, line and mass, fixing, in a few sure strokes, the essential features of the subject matter.    He was Court painter in Madrid under Philip IV, his paintings included portraits of Court Notables, landscapes, mythological and religious subjects together with scenes from common life.   In addition to being Court Painter he was also appointed Marshal of the Royal Household and as such was responsible for organizing and planning ceremonies.   

Dutch painter, lived and worked in Delft.   Most of his paintings portray figures in interiors and are considered some of the most exquisite in Western Art being known for their poetic quality and sensitivity of light and color.

Italian painter and Member of the Venetian School.   He loved to paint  enormous pageant-like scenes of the splendor of Venice with an abundance of marble columns and highly decorative costumes of satin and velvet, his preferred palette being the rich softness of pale blue, orange, silvery white and lemon yellow.   As well as painting many religious and mythological scenes he loved to paint feast scenes from the Bible.
