Watteau, Jean-Antoine
(1684-1721)
French Rococo artist whose interest in theater and ballet is often reflected in elaborately costumed ladies and gentlemen in his paintings. Best known for his "fetes galantes" painted in the latter years of his career but also known for his early works when he concentrated on religious pictures and later military and mythological scenes. |

Whistler, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903) American born painter whose studies and work were mainly to take place outside USA. As a child he studied drawing at the Imperial Academy of Science in St. Petersburg whilst his father was working in Russia, then at the age of 14 went to stay with his Sister in London returning to America 1 year later on the death of his father. In America he spent a few years in the United States Military Academy at West point where he excelled in the drawing class, before finally moving to Europe in 1855 to work as an artist. He first went to Paris where he studied at the Ecole Impériale et Spéciale de Dessin and the Académie Gleyre. He became associated with Avante Garde artists and was greatly influenced by Realism. Later he was to move to London where his painting "At the Piano" was well received at the Royal Academy and where he was to become influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. |
